Jan van Brussel (or workshop) The Martyrdom of St. Lambert of Liège

Netherlands, circa 1489-92

This is a very literal rendition of the event as told in the Golden Legend. While St. Lambert is praying, a "child," the acolyte in the corner, comes to warn of the murderers' approach. The latter arrive while Lambert is praying and proceed to slay him and his retinue. The murderers are kinsmen of two men who had been killed by friends of St. Lambert – and also of a "common woman" whom the saint had denounced.
